MOTHER SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR ASSAULTING CHILD RESULTING IN SERIOUS BODILY INJURY
United States Attorney Johnny Sutton announced that in Waco this afternoon, 20-year-old Fort Hood-based Army soldier Jennifer Lynn Oset was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for assaulting her 5-month old son resulting in serious bodily injury.
In addition to the prison term, United States Chief District Judge Walter S. Smith, Jr., ordered that Oset pay a $5,000 fine and be placed under supervised release for a period of three years after completing her prison term.
On April 10, 2008, a federal jury convicted Oset on one count each of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and reckless injury to a child. Evidence presented at trial showed that on the evening of April 22, 2007, while at home on the Fort Hood Military Reservation, Oset injured her son. Testimony revealed that during a period of time when Oset was alone with the child, the infant suffered from a rapid deceleration injury where the infant’s head suddenly stopped and its brain continued to move which ultimately caused the baby to stop breathing and it’s heart to stop beating.
The infant, who is in the care and custody of Child Protective Services, remains in a persistent vegetative state and connected to a ventilator.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Defense Army Criminal Investigation Division. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Frazier and Major Paul Butler, Special Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
