I.N.S. INSPECTOR AND 12-YEAR FUGITIVE SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON
United
States Attorney Johnny Sutton announced that 46-year-old Jose Trinidad
Carrillo, a former Immigration and Naturalization Service inspector in
El Paso, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for allowing the
equivalent of more than 112,000 kilograms of marijuana to enter the United
States and accepting between $2 million and $3 million in bribes from
1990 to 1993.
On March 24, 1994, Carrillo was convicted of conspiracy to import marijuana,
three counts of importation of marijuana and three counts of accepting
bribes. Carrillo failed to appear for sentencing and was a fugitive from
1994 until he was apprehended in December 2006 in El Paso by deputy U.S.
Marshals. On Tuesday, United States District Judge Frank Montalvo sentenced
Carrillo to the 25-year federal prison term.
In addition to the prison term, Carrillo forfeited to the government his
residence, four automobiles, a motorcycle, ten firearms and approximately
$20,000 in cash.
This case was investigated by agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Assistant United States Attorneys Carlos Hermosillo and Stanley Serwatka
prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
